If you have metabolic syndrome, you’re not alone — more than a third of all adults meet the criteria. Metabolic syndrome doesn’t give you the courtesy of symptoms to warn you that health problems are developing, yet it can cause heart disease and diabetes, so please schedule regular preventive health checkups with Dr. Vincent P. Goux at Physician Clinic Telemedicine Rx. If you have any questions or concerns about your health, call one of his offices in Chandler and Paradise Valley, Arizona, or schedule an appointment online for a metabolic syndrome consultation.

What is metabolic syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome isn’t one disease, it’s a collection of risk factors that increase your chance of developing heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Just one of the factors raises the likelihood of health complications, and the threat rises with each additional risk factor.
You must have at least three of these five factors to be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome:

  • Large waistline of 35 inches or more for women and 40 inches or more for men
  • High triglyceride level
  • Low HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol)
  • High blood pressure
  • High fasting blood sugar

What symptoms appear if you have metabolic syndrome?

Carrying extra weight around your abdomen is the only obvious sign that you may have metabolic syndrome. High triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and high blood pressure don’t cause symptoms until you end up with damage to your heart or blood vessels. You may experience subtle signs of high blood sugar such as increased thirst, frequent urination, and blurry vision.
